From being present during open hours to helping with fundraising events and outreach, volunteers are integral to what we do in and around Harrisonburg and the Shenandoah Valley.

Ways to Volunteer

Do you want to help keep the Safe Space Open, and or expand or open hours? As a space monitor, you’ll go through a training to help you succeed at creating a safe, welcoming, and affirming space for all of our visitors. As a space monitor, you will also be able to lead events, workshops, affinity groups and more within the space! If you are interested in joining the leadership team this is a good place to begin as well!
Currently our trainings are on hold as we work to improve our existing training and train more volunteer trainers. But you can join the waitlist below and when we will contact you when it is started up again.

As a small non-profit, one of the most impactful things you can do is help us fundraise so we can continue operating, continue to offer free resources and events to our community, and continue to grow. Sharing your reason for why you LOVE FCSS to your network is a great way to support FCSS and our community.

As a tabling volunteer, you would be helping us with outreach by tabling at events, sharing info about FCSS, collecting food donations at food drives, and more!
This role requires a tabling training where you will learn how to talk about our organization, and give you experience with how to set up our booth! If this is something you are interested in you can email us and show your interest!

Committee members directly work with our leadership team to assist them in their work for the Safe Space. You can connect with the Leadership team and support our programs committee, outreach committee, social media committee, facilities committee, and more.

If you are a member of a particular identity or sexuality and would like to start an Affinity group, that is another great way you can support our community!
As an Affinity group leader, you would be facilitating conversations and group meetings through discord with our community and hosting the group within the space. Reach out here to learn more

If you are interested in volunteering with us, please fill out the volunteer waitlist form below! This form will allow you to tell us what kind of volunteer experience you want. After completing the form, you will receive an email a week out from the next volunteer training date with more details/pre-training packet.
